Boston Conservatory's Aston Quartet performs 'Alcantara'
In commemoration of Boston Conservatory's 150th anniversary in 2017, the school commissioned a new work to celebrate the life and work of founder Julius Eichberg.
The applicants were asked to consider a piece by Eichberg and compose a reflection on the chosen work. Alumnus Scott Ethier (M.M. '96, composition), the winner of the competition, composed a reflection of the overture to Eichberg's well-known operetta, The Doctor of Alcantara.
During the Conservatory’s school-wide 150th anniversary celebration on February 10, 2017, the piece was world-premiered by the Aston Quartet, comprised of Conservatory students John Castore (B.M. ’19, violin), Jake Vincel (B.M. ’19, violin), and Rebecca Miller (B.M. ’18, viola), and alumnus Johnny Mok (M.M. ’17, cello).
